Lakeland Arts’ Awesome Autumn
Family half-term fun with serious environmental message

Autumn signals a chemistry of colour and creativity across Lakeland Arts attractions this coming half-term (19-27 October).

Each has a varied series of activities ranging from craft and creative workshops, book readings and signings, costume making and a hands-on animation class.

Families can get crafty at Windermere Jetty Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories, Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry in Kendal and at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House at Bowness-on-Windermere.

Ian Read, Head of Participation and Learning, said: “We have fantastic things for families to do across all our venues this autumn with lots of creative activity around the half-term break in Cumbria.

“There is a real environmental slant to many of our activities this autumn. We are particularly delighted to be working with several prominent artists such as Eleanor Chaney and Kat Loudon who are running unique sessions with young people at our venues.

“All our activities complement an exciting range of exhibitions and displays across all venues. Many of the sessions are drop-in while others need to be booked in advance.”

At Windermere Jetty highlights include a Nature’s Winter workshop which explores the seasons and how they affect life in Cumbria and beyond. Visitors who take part will have their work displayed in a forthcoming exhibition.

Local artist Eleanor Chaney will drop-in for a half-day animation workshop while author June Jennings reads from her wonderful pirate adventure story Jim and Slim’s First Adventure.

Youngsters can also explore the museum galleries and search for clues as part of a Jetty Codebreaker game. Children need to uncover answers around the museum and then use the nautical flag alphabet to crack the code.

Abbot Hall Art Gallery stages an amazing free three-day CLIMArt workshop - for young people aged 10-15 years. They can take part in a series of exciting activities looking at environmental action with artist Kat Loudon. March out to the next climate protest with your own beautifully designed banner or placard.

Be ready for Halloween with the Creepy Costume Making days at Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry. Ideal for children aged 7+. Design, create patterns and make your own unique Halloween costume using recycled materials.

At Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, take part in the Great Detective Challenge! Don your deerstalker hat and magnifying glass and become a detective for the day. If you find all the clues around the house you’ll get a prize and free cake!

Make a Change runs throughout the half-term break at Blackwell. Learn how you can use Arts & Crafts to make a statement about the issues that matter to you.

All Lakeland Arts’ venues are great locations for families with events and activities all year round with trails and challenges, fun museum interactives, creative stations and period costume dressing-up (at Windermere Jetty and Blackwell).

Abbot Hall’s Art Club is a five week course ideal for arty children aged 7-12 years. Artist Lex Blakeway, a fibre artist from Ulverston, takes participants on a colourful journey into the gallery. The next five week Art Club runs from 2 to 30 November. Price: £50 for all five weeks or 50% discount (£25) for Kendal residents with LA8 and LA9 postcode.

For under 5s, Crawl in the Hall returns to Abbot Hall from 1 November while Windermere Jetty runs weekly Water Babies sessions on Wednesdays throughout October.
